Musical Times is the horse with the greatest potential upside on Thursday and her form already gives plenty of substance to the hype.

Charlie Appleby’s filly is unbeaten in two starts. She edged out the more experienced Scommessa Sicura on debut at Newmarket, with the pair pulling clear of a subsequent winner, before taking another sizeable step forward at Yarmouth. She was much more professional there and won with considerably more in hand than the bare result suggests. Sporting Life/Timeform describe her as open to significant improvement over the mile and currently make her their first choice.

That step up from seven furlongs to a mile is one of the strongest positives. She is by Frankel, has shaped as though stamina rather than raw sprint speed will be her strength, and Doncaster’s straight mile should give William Buick plenty of time to allow her to find a rhythm.

There is also less tactical pressure than there might be around a turning track. She can be ridden patiently behind what should be a reasonable gallop before Buick asks her to lengthen.

This is, however, a genuine Group 2 rather than an easy opportunity. Scommessa Sicura has since franked Musical Times’ debut form and was only worn down late in Listed company at Salisbury. Sea Of Rain is rated 101, while Ballyskeagh arrives after a strong Curragh Group 3 second and looks certain to appreciate a strongly run mile.

So Musical Times still has to improve.
